Vision Insurance plans are designed to cover a routine annual eye exam and may also cover a pair of glasses or contact lenses.
Medical Insurance plans will cover as many office visits as are needed to treat a medical eye problem such as an eye infection (conjunctivitis), eye injury, dry eye, cataracts, glaucoma, etc… The visits to treat medical eye problems are not limited to once per year as many routine vision insurance plans are. With medical eye care annual deductibles and co payments apply the same as any other medical office visit.
One of the Essential Benefits for Children under the new health care law is an annual eye exam and glasses or contact lenses for patients 18 years of age and younger. Insurance plans sold through the Washington Health Plan Finder are required to offer the essential children’s benefits.
